Artist Biography

Sara Tayeh (b. 2001) is a Palestinian visual artist based in Gaza. Having lived through five wars, her practice explores themes of displacement, identity, alienating fragmentation, and emotional resilience amid severe instability. Tayeh discovered her passion for drawing at age 14 and later earned a Diploma in Business Administration from Gaza Community College in 2021. She developed her artistic skills through formal workshops at Dar Al-Kalima University College of Arts and Culture, working across mediums including acrylic, oil, charcoal, clay, and cardboard sculpture. Her work has been showcased internationally in group exhibitions, such as Art for Palestine with Create Humanity in New York and the Sahab Museum Festival in France.

Artist Story

For Sara Tayeh, art grew from a childhood passion into a vital psychological space for emotional survival, memory, and continuity. Raised under continuous military conflict in Gaza, Tayeh’s youth was shaped by systemic instability and profound loss. The destruction of her family home and local educational institutions during the war disrupted her academic trajectory, forced her separation from her mother, and relocated her to a displaced persons tent.

Despite severe shortages of basic life necessities and fine art materials, Tayeh continues to document her environment through symbolic art. Working under conditions where time, physical space, and materials are deeply precarious, she translates everyday struggles—such as queuing for water or clutching a door handle—into painted visual narratives. Tayeh continues her artistic practice with an enduring commitment to academic growth, international dialogue, and preserving human truth through loss.

Artist Statement

My work investigates the psychological, spatial, and emotional reality of living under extreme conditions, displacement, and ongoing conflict. Working primarily in acrylic, oil, and charcoal, I construct symbolic visual environments through distorted human figures, surreal compositions, and intense color palettes. My practice focuses on how ordinary objects transform into political and emotional artifacts when basic survival is constantly threatened.

In my series Red Sky, I utilize monochromatic red atmospheres to establish visual continuity and high-tension emotional resonance. Recurring motifs function as a conceptual lexicon:

• Yellow Lines mark shifting, artificial borders that shrink space and isolate communities.

• Jerrycans and Water Containers represent scarcity, youth lost to physical labor, and the fragile line between survival and danger.

• Coffee Cups and Flames reflect the internal tension between seeking a quiet moment of peace and being emotionally consumed by fear.

• Door Handles and Tents symbolize attachment to home, memory, and the physical burdens of forced displacement.

Rather than simply recording destruction, my paintings preserve the lived experience, internal quietly-held defiance, and humanity of Gaza. Art remains my medium to challenge silence, transform disruption into visual record, and assert that life retains meaning despite profound loss.
