Aziz Bouzekri is a self-taught Moroccan cartoonist and editorial artist whose work uses powerful visual iconography to address human rights, political struggles, and global justice. His cartoons focused on Palestine center on themes of solidarity, resistance, displacement, and the pursuit of peace. Rather than depicting literal scenes, he translates modern sociopolitical events into universally understood metaphors, employing symbols such as the Key of Return, olive branches, peace doves, keffiyehs, and maps composed of hearts to capture the resilience and enduring spirit of the Palestinian people.

Artist Biography

Aziz Bouzekri is a self-taught Moroccan cartoonist and editorial artist whose professional career began at the age of 18, when his first cartoon was published in the regional newspaper Tamuda Tetouan in 2002. He served as a staff cartoonist for the publication for twelve years until it ceased publication in 2014. Parallel to his early press work, Bouzekri engaged in university student art exhibitions between 2002 and 2006, expanding his reach digitally in 2013 by launching his platform "Caricatures Aziz Bouzekri."

Bouzekri is an active member of both the United World Cartoonists (UWC) and the World Cartoon Institute (WCI). His political and human rights-focused cartoons are regularly featured internationally, including in the Cartoon Home Network International (CHNI) magazine. His work uses bold linework, stark contrast, and deeply symbolic motifs to address themes of human struggle, peace, displacement, and justice.

Artist Story

Aziz Bouzekri’s journey with editorial art began in his high school years, driven by a desire to translate complex social and political realities into visual narratives. Without formal art school training, he developed a sharp, expressive ink style that quickly earned him a place in press media when Tamuda Tetouan published his debut cartoon in 2002. Working under tight newsroom deadlines for over a decade built his discipline, while independent university exhibitions allowed him to experiment with broader conceptual art.

As media transitioned online, Bouzekri adapted by establishing a dedicated social media presence in 2013 to connect directly with a global audience. His work frequently centers on solidarity with the oppressed, incorporating powerful cultural iconography—such as the key of return, olive branches, peace doves, poppies, and iconic symbolic figures—to create universal visual messages that transcend language barriers. Today, his international affiliations allow him to use art as a global medium for advocacy, truth, and peace.

"I view the editorial cartoon not merely as an illustration, but as a visual language of conscience and accountability. My work is rooted in self-taught discipline and guided by the belief that line, contrast, and metaphor can speak louder than words when confronting human suffering, injustice, and the pursuit of freedom.

Drawing inspiration from human rights struggles and global sociopolitical events, I rely on clear visual symbols—keys of displacement, doves of peace, sprouting plants amid destruction, and national symbols reborn through shared humanity. Whether depicting a child carrying an olive branch or a cityscape built on shared grief, my goal is to strip away visual fluff to reveal the raw emotional truth of a story. Through my cartoons, I aim to provoke thought, foster empathy, and provide a voice for resilience."
